We had a mini crisis this morning — a power outage at our Los Gatos Center, with no word on if or when power would be restored. Fortunately, Melanie, our Program Director, called me before 8:00 a.m., and we were able to quickly accommodate our LG clients at our sister center, Willow Glen.

What started as an emergency turned into a wonderful opportunity to bring our two centers together and see how the chemistry worked. WG and LG clients enjoyed word games, bingo, karaoke and dancing to Michael Jackson songs together — new friendships were formed, and old ones were rekindled along the way.

Thank you to our clients and their families for making this smooth transition possible. Special thanks to Melanie, Katie, and Maria for their flexibility and for bringing all the necessary emergency kits, medications, and meals. And kudos to Monse, Berenice, Shannel, and Isabella, along with our WG clients, for graciously hosting and making everyone feel so welcome.

A great deal of fun was had by all!

Eleven thousand Americans turn 65 every day. The nation is in the midst of “Peak 65,” the largest retirement wave in U.S. history, and by 2030, adults 65 and older will outnumber children under 18 for the first time ever. This “silver tsunami” poses a hard question for caregiving: the traditional answer — adding more people — cannot scale to the velocity and magnitude of the wave. Augmenting the caregiving workforce with new tools, including robotics, is no longer science fiction; it is becoming a necessity.
